Durango resident Eleanor Louise Dezendorf died of natural causes Friday, July 16, 2010, at Four Corners Healthcare Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Dezendorf was born to John and Minnie Kidwell on June 25, 1924, in Houston, Texas.
In 1943, she married James Dezendorf in Houston. The Dezendorfs moved to Durango from Houston in 1966.
The family remembers her as excellent cook who excelled at the skills that made a house a home. Mrs. Dezendorf was an avid volunteer having participated in the Garden Club of Durango, the Women's Auxiliary at Community Hospital, and she was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Her favorite hobby and talent was gardening. She always had "a trophy lawn and garden," her family wrote.
"She always had time for her kids and grandchildren," her son Richard Dezendorf remembered. "Her grandkids said she was the most supporting woman ever. ... She often served as a mom to other neighborhood children and anyone in need of a mom's love and support."
Mrs. Dezendorf was preceded in death by her husband James in 1997.
She is survived by three sons, Richard Dezendorf of Durango, John Dezendorf of Durango, and James Dezendorf of Flora Vista, N.M.; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation will occur. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Hood Mortuary in Durango. Chaplain Earl Caudill of Hospice of Mercy will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or to the Garden Club of Durango, in care of Marsha Schuetz, 9795 County Road 250, Durango, CO 81301.
